Every year at About Staffing is unique and we decided we wanted to share some of our most memorable things from working with our amazing clients in 2024!
Our Favourite Moments:
A Career comes full circle
This year, we had the joy of celebrating something really special: a candidate we placed 25 years ago retired after a long and rewarding career. Thinking back to their first day and seeing where they ended up just makes us smile. It’s amazing to know we had a hand in their journey, and it’s moments like these that remind us why we love what we do.
A Loyal client finds new beginnings
Another moment that really stuck with us this year was when a client of 21 years hit a rough patch after their company was sold. They reached out, and we were able to help them find a new role with another client we’ve known for 10 years. Seeing them land on their feet felt so good. It’s times like these that make us appreciate the relationships we’ve built and the trust people put in us. We’re just happy we could be there to help.
Questionable Quotes:
Sometimes (oftentimes), interviews bring out some unexpected gems that leave us smiling long after. Here are a couple of our favourites from 2024:
“I’m too old for that poo poo.”
This one had us laughing, straight to the point, and honestly relatable.
“I have my backpack with me today so I can fill my freezer with meat. My bag is full of sausage.”
As literal as it is confusing. Just as funny but decidedly less relatable than the previous one.
Surprise Interview Moments:
Interviews take unexpected turns, we’ve certainly seen our fair share before. Here are a couple of moments from 2024 that stood out.
Sorry i gotta take this
A candidate’s phone rang mid-interview. He picked it up, held up a finger to say, “Just a moment,” and tried to walk out of the office. He couldn’t get the door open and kept saying “hello, hello, hello” into the phone. Turns out it was a spam call with no one on the other end. He came back, sat down, and explained, “I keep getting these weird calls from numbers I don’t know with no one on the other line.” It’s moments like these that keep us on our toes, making sure everything stays on track.
Emotional Support Buddy
Another candidate brought his wife to the interview and asked if she could come in with him. That one left us a bit speechless. It’s not every day someone brings a plus-one to an interview! We navigated the situation smoothly, keeping things professional yet accommodating.
Handling these unexpected moments is all part of what we do, ensuring the process runs smoothly and efficiently for everyone involved.
The interview about the interview?
We had a candidate come in for what they thought was a preparation meeting. Partway through, they asked when the actual interview would happen. When we explained that this was the interview, they were genuinely surprised. It was a bit of an odd moment, but we all had a good laugh about it in the end.
On My Terms
One candidate decided to get creative with the candidate agreement. They signed it but added a bunch of their own terms to the contract. Negotiating terms is normal but changing them on your own… it was quite the surprise to see their personal clauses written in, and it definitely gave us a chuckle.
Is your dishwasher running?
During a phone call with a candidate, they asked to put me on hold—but didn’t actually mute the call. I ended up hearing their entire conversation as they tried to sell a broken dishwasher. It was one of those moments where you just have to laugh and roll with it.
The 30 day drug test
When asked if they could pass a drug check, one candidate honestly replied that they would need 30 days to get a clean result. It was refreshingly candid, though maybe not the answer we were expecting!
